Quay Park hīkoi whakaaro - Taiao

One of our hapū mātāpono is kaitiakitanga which encourages us to take up our role as guardians and caretakers of our lands, our resources and our taonga with the future in mind. Many whānau want to see our hapū actively demonstrate kaitiakitanga of the Te Tōangaroa precinct and have shared their whakaaro with us on what that might look like.

Whānau have expressed a desire for our hapū to reconnect the Quay Park area with the environment so that anyone who visits the precinct can feel more in touch with nature. Te Tōangaroa offers us an opportunity to lead the rest of Tāmaki Makaurau by example in creating a sustainable environment that connects visitors with the native fauna and flora that make Aotearoa unique.

 Some of the feedback whānau shared with us included;

  • More green spaces
  • Better access to the water, unable to see the harbour from Quay Street
  • If the Port moves, create ways to access water while still providing jobs for whānau who work on the wharf
  • Help return native birds to the area
  • Carbon emission screens along Beach Road
  • Harakeke planted for weaving
  • Service entrances softened
  • Pay tribute to the original shoreline
  • Paying respect to Papatuanuku, Tāne Mahuta, Tangaroa
  • Landscape to help block noise along Beach Road
  • Quay Park becomes a commercial asset that encourages people to respect the whenua

We want this to be a place that whānau and visitors from all over Aotearoa and the world can find connection, meaning, experience a bit of our culture and understand what is important to us.
