Nau mai: Merrin Gemmell, Village Manager

We’re pleased to welcome Merrin Gemmell who will step into the role as Village Manager after Cherie Schofield, General Manager for over twenty years, announced her retirement. We had a kōrero with Merrin to find out more about her and what she hopes to bring to the role.

“During my career, I have worked across a number of different industries, including film, marketing and sales. I have a Diploma in Fine Arts and a keen interest in film, arts and culture,” Merrin shares.

“Working in age care has always been where I’ve felt most at home as I’m passionate about caring for people and having a positive impact. I’m excited to be working with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, helping to support the iwi and care for the residents of Eastcliffe.”

Coming in to the role as Village Manager, Merrin says she is looking forward to learning about the history of Ōrākei, the iwi and the surrounding community. “Ōrākei is an incredibly beautiful part of Tāmaki Makaurau and the residents of Eastcliffe are proud to call it their home. I hope to see Eastcliffe and the community do more together to ensure the residents feel nurtured and have a sense of belonging.”

Merrin is in her second week of training and says she’s loving it. She has relished the opportunity to participate in a whakatau (welcome) at the Whai Rawa office with other new starters and looks forward to immersing herself more in to the culture and hapū events.

“I’ve definitely hit the ground running and I’m excited to be here. I feel incredibly privileged to have the opportunity to work in such a fantastic role and I believe I can build on the hard work and foundation that Cherie has laid and really make a difference. I’m committed to representing Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei to the highest standard, helping to look after the residents of Eastcliffe and continue to build its great reputation.”

Merrin is working with Cherie to ensure a smooth transition before Cherie retires at the end of July.
