Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Properties' team grows

Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Rawa continues to grow with the appointment of two new positions to round out the property team.

Liam Carey and Maraika Rose Lidgard join the team as Te Tōangaroa Asset Manager and Property Project Coordinator respectively. With more than a decade of property experience under his belt, Liam joins the property arm of the central Tāmaki Makaurau hapū from Kāinga Ora where he held the role of Acquisitions Manager.

Prior to his time at Kāinga Ora, Liam was Senior Asset Manager at Labtech London Limited, where he was instrumental in the regeneration and development of Hawley Wharf, a major mixed used development project in Camden, London. Once an unloved area opposite the popular Camden Markets, Hawley Wharf is a modernised precinct boasting the largest farmer’s market in North London, 150 retail stores, apartments, 60,000sq ft of co-working space plus more than 60 food and beverage spaces.

Taking on the asset management of Te Tōangaroa, Liam will drive the hapū vision and masterplan for the precinct including the regeneration journey. Te Tōangaroa is one of the largest single-ownership landholdings in Te Pokapū o Tāmaki (Tāmaki CBD) and is the largest commercial asset for Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. Te Tōangaroa spans Quay Street from The Strand to Britomart and along Beach Road encompassing key landmarks such as Spark Arena and the Old Railway Building.

Neil Donnelly, General Manager of Property Development for Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Rawa, says Liam is an exciting appointment and will be invaluable to the team and the success of Te Tōangaroa.

“Liam’s background within the property industry and his international expertise in maximising the potential of high value urban precincts with due consideration for the environment is perfect for the role. Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei has a vision for Te Tōangaroa underpinned by its values such as kaitiakitanga and we’ve appointed Liam to help lead and drive this vision forward,” says Neil.

Liam is ready to bring his experience in specialised mixed-use property, urban regeneration, property development and asset management to his new role. On his appointment, Liam says he is excited to work for a property developer with a core focus on bettering the future of its hapū members.

“I look forward to untapping the potential for Te Tōangaroa. It is a privilege to work for an organisation so intently focused on producing positive, sustainable and long-lasting outcomes for the hapū alongside Tāmaki Makaurau as a whole,” Liam says.

Also joining the team is Maraika Rose Lidgard who will help to coordinate the Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Rawa property portfolio.

Maraika Rose recently graduated from the University of Auckland. A savvy young businesswoman in her own right, Maraika Rose was awarded the University’s Māori Business Student of the year in 2020 and was the first wāhine Māori to do so. The award recognises excellence in academic performance, community service, communication skills, extra-curricular activities, and knowledge of world issues.

Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Rawa’s property portfolio includes Oneoneroa; the North Shore residential development, the award winning whānau housing project Kāinga Tuatahi in Ōrākei, and a successful joint venture with Fletcher Living (Kowhai Ridge).
